The collection Seven Gratings draws on the artist’s experience of living with an autoimmune skin disease known as psoriasis, symbolised by various household objects. The cheese grater represents the compulsion to scratch, the clock points at the accelerated regeneration of the skill cells, the brush and pan portray the desire to erase the mess caused by the fallen skin, the teapot and table symbolise the necessity to befriend the condition, and the throne reaffirms the almightiness of the skin. Through surrealistic explorations, the objects become the protagonists of their own stories, as shown in the comic strips of the Skin King and the accompanying texts.
This work was created as part of Altamirra’s online residency Objet Trouvé + which drew its inspiration from the Surrealist principle of the found object.
Ceramics
The table allows the finger to run along its edge indefinitely while objects dance on its top according to a pattern of permutations.
Recipient of discarded star-shaped treasures, the pan knows still how to float on a lake if the winds blow in the right direction.
Recalling ancient hair and furriness, the brush can tell the secrets of carpets and places marked with a cross under your feet.
The grater searches what is buried so deep that once it comes to the surface it is undecipherable. It has the sun as a shadow.
Great wings fly in harmony, yet the hands of the clock never meet. To reset the clock is to become free or to give up.
Made of majesty and deep red velvet fabric, the throne summons the creativity of time and contains prayers to the one.
