Artist Statement

Élodie Alexandre makes illustrative constructions and multi-layered ceramic pieces that create a poetic world of personal images.

Her work oscillates between the two and three dimensions, between clay and drawing, and the exploration of the space between the two acts as a language to carry narratives with a universal resonance. Earlier, those narratives revolved around experiences of displacement while more recently she has explored topics from a feminist perspective, with the notion that the personal for women is political.

Her work is often anchored in the representation of everyday objects which she uses as metaphors and carriers of meaning.

Recent evolutions in her practice have also led her to investigate figurative representations from an archetypal angle. In combination with a use of colours based on symbolism, her depictions offer layered possibilities for meaning and story-telling.
